In sharing my soul-friend Marguerite’s journey into leukemia my hope is that it will bring understanding and empowerment to anyone who must face a life-threatening illness, be it yourself or with a loved one.

These creations are not written as a timeline to capture the daily events of an ill person’s experience. It is the odyssey of a life and death struggle that began November 1, 2002 with an emotional grasping toward life. It is a continuous circle of fear and pain, despair and hope.  To me, the dates are not important, nor is the chronology.  The emotions and reality have no sense of time because they are still with me now, and they will always be with me.

Marguerite is still with me in the continuation of life.  She continues with me as a memory, and as a remembrance of her passion for life, and of her questions of life, and mine—which I am still trying to answer.

All sorrows can be borne if we put them in a story or tell a story about them.
- Isak Dinesen, woman author of Out of Africa

Chemo
Shall I take it or not?
Take the risk or get caught?
Let nature take her course?
Or, stay healthy with Life’s Force?

Dripping Tears

It’s all left behind
In England dead kings of old under
Their own likeness, they lie
The whispers of generations
mingle with held energy.

While sorrows and mourners grasp
onto life that they find
Dead kings in their coffins want nothing.
Its all left behind.

Fire Cone
Even as it lives, the Lodgepole Pine tree prepares for its death and continuance by growing fire cones.  These unique cones are sealed with resin, and when there is a forest fire, the resin is melted by the heat, releasing the stock-piled seed.  These fire cones will live on the tree for years, only to be released by the heat of a deadly fire to ensure the Lodgepole pine tree lives on in the continuation of life.
